Job hunting in India is a changing game

It’s time to realize that it is no longer the same old game that has gone electronic. Certainly not!

Lima Sehgal

The passivity with which a large majority of job seekers devour information amazes me.

Basking in the epi-centre of a tornado is quite an unprofessional attitude towards one’s survival.

Because of the tremendous volume of information, the job hunting game for many has boiled down to just a process of finding and searching information.

A few grey hairs is no longer a qualification for a seasoned job hunting professional. It’s time to realize that it is no longer the same old game that has gone electronic. Certainly not!

Somehow, one must shift the concentration to the search techniques themselves, rather than focus on the catch and match as an end-all.

Application of information is becoming crucial, especially if you are competing in the international job market, where finding job openings does not translate as a complete operation. One also has to have an idea as to what makes it tick.

This is one market that breaks the hypothesis that the world is round — or even around!

Is your Resume shining?

Feel Good Factor- – Is your Resume Shining?

Anil Mahajan

The country is inundated with “Feel Good Factor”, coupled with “India Shining” — (Don’t dare ignorance lest you be labeled eccentric). India is shining baby!

But why you are whining like opposition party spokesmen?

The marketing of a political party is coming of age in India. The noise is so loud that all of us who do not agree with the punch-line prefer to keep silent. To top it all, even some of the opposition members have been floored by the hype and are actually looking for ways to cross over.

This is sheer inundation of the target audience with a focused information campaign.

This is a calculated & well conceived branding strategy, with the achievements carefully worded & showcased in brocade in all the leading newspapers.

You are left with no option but to believe. The branding is all pervasive. The opposition think-tank has gone bust & has given up all hopes of winning.

And, though I have been a headhunter for so many years, I am suddenly getting calls  from journalists & correspondents all over the world to re-confirm (?) that India is shining so much that even UK & US techies have a bright future in India (in contrast to the days of ’91, when India was thought to be teeming with millions of hungry men & beggars, snakes and cows).

And they wish to be reassured in the positive. If I say the statement is false, they would write me off as an eccentric or an illiterate headhunter. I have no option but to agree.

This media hype has given me food for thought for briefing job seekers in the field of Resume writing & resume logistics.

We will start with learning from this marketing campaign in the sectors of resume writing, cover letter writing, resume logistics & move on in the next issue to Shining in the Interviews & Shining in the workplace to get very Positive performance appraisals & Faster promotions.

Is your Resume Shining?

Have you ever tried to analyse whether or not your resume is shining? Mind you, you will not get an interview call or an offer letter if your resume is not shining.

You look at your resume many times, & unfortunately every time you convince yourself that it shines well or rather very well. The stark reality could be otherwise. Maybe it is not shining. Maybe it is a damp squib. Maybe you are seeing it shine in the light emanating from your own or your close friend’s subjectivity, bias, sheer ignorance of the competition or even narcissism.

Have you ever asked yourself any pertinent question brand positioning questions? For instance, If you are a GM-Marketing in Onida. have you ever seen the resume of GM- Marketing in LG / Samsung / Sony / Philips? Frankly, you have not.  Maybe your resume looks trivial before the resume of your competitors? Ignorance is unfortunately not bliss in this case. As a GM-Marketing, you have tried successfully to know your competitors’ marketing plans but, in your private battle for a better job, you are a complete novice. No doubt, you are a professional marketing head, but you are not a professional in resume making.

Lesson no. 1: Your Resume is a Marketing Document, whether you agree or not. So, better start believing it & seeing it as a marketing document to promote your brand.

Lesson no. 2: Accomplished professionals certainly do jobs differently. Haldiram makes better gol gappas & better jalebis. Compaq makes better computers. Swami Chidananda is a better guru. So, use the skills of a professional resume writer having an expertise in preparing a mind blowing resume.

Your resume must shine & create Feel Good Factor among the GateKeepers (Placement consultants as well as HRD heads) & hiring managers. Consequently  you  will win with thumping majority.

Your Shining Resume needs wide Supply Chain

Now you have a Shining Resume. You keep it in a box & it will gather dust. No ad campaign becomes a winning campaign unless accompanied with a solid media plan. The political parties go for print media, they go for digital media & even internet & so does your company. You also need to draw a detailed plan as to which all headhunters your Shining Resume should go to, whether in print or by e-mail, you also must decide which companies need be attacked & made to get a Feel good factor by sending your Shining Resume. You also need to make a list of their websites & start posting your Shining Resume into the careers pages of these websites.

Alternatively, you must go for a resume blast to consultants & companies. Let the world know that you have a shining resume showcasing your unique achievements differently (you alone know that it is penned by a copywriter). This alone will generate marketing enquiries. Maybe every company which matters would love or even compete with all others to hire you. You have a choice. You are now being chased by headhunters & companies alike & you decide which company to join. That is the Magic Mantra for the day. See you later in the next issue.

Creating Value at WORK

Creating Value at WORK

By GIRISH KHANNA -Creative Connections- (Search, Selection, Recruitment, Training & Development)

We all believe at one time or the other that there are no limits to what can be achieved.

If life is a drama, then let us strive to write a scenario filled with happiness and joy.

What is happiness for human beings?

Considering the fact that we spend (at least most of us do) 50% of our time working, It lies in making steady, continuous efforts so that one can declare at the end of each day, “Today again I’ve done my best! Today again I have no regrets! Today I have won!”

To work each day to the best of our ability, so that we can truly say that we are satisfied with what we have achieved. Actually, these unflagging efforts lead to a life of great victory.

It may seem quite ordinary and mundane, but this is the noblest path of life. It is the path of outstanding work force.

Nothing is greater than sincerity. No matter what the immediate results may be, when viewed from a long-range perspective, those who are sincere will be left with the trust and confidence of others. They will surely have their pride. To me, Trust is a treasure; pride is a badge of honour.

We must strive to create a personal history at work that is full of times upon which we can look back with pride and satisfaction. So that we can say, “At that time I really challenged myself. I achieved far more than I thought possible.” This record will become an important foundation for creating ultimate value at work and life.

Let’s assess the work of King Ashoka. The revolution in his rule began with a revolution in his own way of life. Making himself a model for the people, he forged this change of heart into concrete policies. As a ruler, he devoted himself to the happiness of the people. “I will not be satisfied until all the people in my work environment have benefited, I will continue striving until then; I will devote myself to my duties.” This was his spirit. We seriously need to imbibe those spirits.

Ashoka faced many difficulties. There was resistance. There were plots. But once he had decided on his reforms, he never retreated. He worked without resting, instructing his ministers to report to him about their duties at whatever time and in whatever place.

Our life, our work brings real meaning to others only when we make our hearts shine. We need to have the awareness that everything in life exists to train and strengthen us. To attempt to escape from the world of reality and seek happiness elsewhere is meaningless.

The goal of work is to create the highest value and obtain the greatest happiness.

Value can thus be divided into three categories: beauty, gain, and good. Beauty means that which is aesthetically pleasing to the senses that makes us work. Gain means gaining anything that improves the quality of our daily lives. Good refers to the net result of our positive actions.

A mission, then, is not something bestowed upon us or decided by others, it is that we again create ourselves. What generates our mission at work, is our awakening and determination in the present, challenging our limitations and advancing toward our goal. No human being grows unless he suffers, unless he works at growing.

A central challenge is to establish on a global scale a philosophy that is consistently and clearly focused on creating value at work. Only in this way can we create a corporate world lit by the inherent dignity of all people.

Let us possess firm hope and live out our lives enveloped in this hope that when we change, the world changes. Everything is up to us. Everything comes back to us; it’s not about others. When we actually believe in and become one with the mystic law, our impermanent self becomes eternal. As a result we are able to break through any deadlock.

Let us touch the lives of all around us – and create a powerful new ground swell to bring forth our human potential.

The Beware Factor in Interviews

More the comfort level you can generate into the mind of the hiring manager, better are your chances of selection.

Now, why the hell he is looking for comfort levels?

Anil Mahajan

Tells Nokia…… why interview clear aapne na kia?

The Beware Factor

Interview: 10.00 AM

What if…

I hire him…

He wins Pitches…

Mr. Popular…

He Takes my Job!!!

So, I better not hire him.

What we discussed in the last issue on “The Beware Factor” has been amply demonstrated in the recent ad on TV by Nokia.

The power of negative imaging generates fear in the hiring manager – and it is a power that is abundantly & universally present among all professionals. Hiring manager, therefore, tend not to select people who appear better than them.

One notable exception was Henry Rockefeller. He was asked by a news magazine as to what was the secret of his success.

“I always select professionals better than me.”

The stark reality is that almost cent per cent of hiring managers either go for a professional appearing a shade or a couple of shades lower in ability. The hiring manager is not the owner of the organisation, and he doesn’t want to have nightmares about losing his job. He find the easiest solution: REJECT THIS MAN under one pretext or another.

So where is the solution for the candidate?

Either try to appear a shade lower than the interviewer or try to appear like his alter ego (again a shade lower) as a bit of narcissism is present in everybody. You see your face everyday in the mirror & never hate it. Even Mogambo likes himself. Being a hiring manager’s alter ego needs a careful research of the interviewer both offline, before the interview and online during the interview. Relating is a deadly tool & coupled with Alter ego tool generates a strong Potion to effectively nip the “The Beware Factor” in the bud.

Common Ground

One of my readers could not fully understand the Relating concept & called me up. He was to appear in an interview in a durables company & the hiring manager was some Bannerjee. He thought that relating meant the interviewer would select one of his Relations or a Bengali fellow. It took me half an hour to explain the concept of relating which is Continually Building Common Ground. You are not being interviewed for a govt. job where Bhai Bhatijabaad(nepotism) matters the most. It is a case of one of the private sector organizations, where delivery & results are most important. Selection tool “Relating” dwells on the comfort level. More the comfort level you can generate into the mind of the hiring manager, better are your chances of selection.

Now, why the hell he is looking for comfort level? Because, he would find himself comfortable in generating results for the company with you as a subordinate.

Job-hunting on the Internet – Tips for Indian Jobseekers

Which job websites are useful for jobs in India?

Jayalakshmi

The Indian Jobseeker is net savvy. Today most jobseekers use the internet for searching for jobs.

But here are a few facts that you should be aware of  while hunting for jobs on the internet

Job websites get their vacancies from several sources. Either directly from Companies or Placement Consultants or they may be quoting from other websites, newspapers or magazines. As a jobseeker you should be aware that the quality of vacancies may differ from site to site depending on how they source, manage and update their data.

You need to check on a few facts:

1) Check if the date of posting is mentioned on the vacancy posted. Also check if it carries a relevant date for applying, a current date. All vacancies do have an expiry date.

2) Websites may not delete old vacancies but may use a simple system of scrolling with the current posts above and the older ones below. So while you check the latest jobs also check a few of the older ones.

3) Some websites tend to post vacancies without the purpose of jobseekers using them. They may be using platforms carrying jobs to get traffic i.e. more site visits from jobseekers or others. Or, maybe, they are using the vacancies to get a particular type of visitor, to get revenue from advertisers and Google advertisements.

4) Many websites are duff sites .They may show vacancies, but when you apply thru the site you go nowhere. This may be a means to collect emails or personal data or whatever. You can sit on the fence forever waiting.

So how does the Indian jobseekers figure out what is a good job website on the internet? Most use referrals from friends or simply go for trial and error.

Some popular job websites in India are Naukri, Monster, Timesjobs, Shine, JobsDB, Clickjobs and a host of others in all shapes and avatars. Please be aware that there are many vacancies that never get posted on the internet. Many placement firms do not use job websites either their own or others for posting vacancies. Many companies also do not use the internet for recruitment or for posting their vacancies. Do not miss out on them. The offline job hunting systems are equally important and must not be neglected.
