Cover Letter provides Great Cover

Cover Letter provides Great Cover

By Anil Mahajan, MBA PGDIT (IIFT)

Like a phoenix, the cover letter has risen from the ashes and is very much alive and kicking.

Unless you have a PERFECT work background, growing academic qualifications and SOLID GOLD EMPLOYERS then a résumé just won’t work on its own. It is only with an effective cover letter that you can save your butt and get that interview call. With an effective cover letter, you can promote yourself any which way you want.

A cover letter is just not an optional add-on. Actually, the resume is an optional add on.

During my headhunting days, I have been using this as a “guru mantra”. I hunted a man for a company, and, seeing his resume, I found that he’s lacked somewhat in his resume (for instance, he had 8 years of experience as against the 14 desired by the company).

And his resume would “khol his pol” and not lead to an interview call. I asked the man to write a cover letter showing his prowess in the skills the company wanted with absolutely no mention of the shortcoming!

After ten years of working with job seekers in all industries as a placement consultant, the best results and fastest turnaround I’ve EVER SEEN from application to interview has proven time and time again to be sending a cover letter ONLY, and taking the résumé to the interview (where you can answer any concerns in person). I’m always being asked by job seekers “How important is a cover letter?” What they should really be asking is… “How important is my résumé?”

Because of the sheer volume of résumés being submitted for each job (especially jobs posted on the net in naukri, Timesjobs, jobstreet etc.), employers simply don’t have time to read and interpret your past skills and experience; so they simply use your résumé to discriminate against you. In other words, they’re looking for what you don’t have rather than what you do have…

Stop mass mailing your resume to improve your reach

Stop mass mailing your resume to improve your reach

Lima Sehgal

Considering the job market conditions today, there is an urgent need for jobseekers to address the issue of improving their visibility.

Over the past decade mass -mailing resumes has become a way of life. As a marketing strategy it has low merit in showcasing any candidate. But as a concept it holds the promise of the ultimate shortcut in job hunting. Few can resist the seduction.

The vacancy volume has hit a new low. The squeeze on jobseekers has made the competition levels escalate. Not only has the pie become smaller, one does not get to sometimes even smell the piece.

The first line of attack to the problem is to stop job-hunting by proxy. We have to dig our hands into this messy business without the comfort of resume mass mailing. Today’s job market conditions calls for aggressive marketing. Like climbing on the rooftop and yelling – Here I am, as good as good can get.

Perhaps it is also time to throw that old mindset out of the window. The one about finding jobs, which says if you search hard enough, it will be found. Not only do we need to research the nuances specific to our industry but also identify the placement firms specializing in our field of work.

We may talk of global job shortages but that is no invitation to follow the herd.

Job hunting on the internet this holiday season

Job hunting on the internet this holiday season

Lima Sehgal

When does the internet have a holiday?

If the answer is never, then jobseekers need to address a very important issue – the human factor on the net.

The internet usually is a faceless medium for hunting, searching or sending emails. So far so good. But when it comes to applying, talking to placement firms, or simply finding out  — then there could be new dimensions. There may be another human on the other side of the ether – alive…

I find it amusing that there is so much obsolete data on the internet that when I get a phone call, the caller sometimes gets speechless with surprise. But what gets me speechless is the fact that some of the callers treat me like a non human voice, non persona -Multilingual, perfect in dishing out information, robotic in service and impervious to mundanities like sleep timings.

Sleep? The internet never sleeps either, so I learnt the hard way.

I get calls from irritated jobseekers who telephone local and foreign placement firms in the middle of the night to find that they are sleeping too. (So why am I putting wrong information in the Jobnet Directory, they ask with indignation?)

I am not trying to educate, only requesting that, like me, there are others who have given their contact details on the net. They too may not enjoy waking up early on Sunday mornings. I do hope that, with the holiday season around the corner, jobseekers would get down to realizing that the humans we reach through the internet desire a few holidays too …
