Freshers in India are unaware of the realities of the jobmarket

Every year, year after year, I get utterly hit by the fresher season. Nothing has changed over the years. They remain as lost.

Have we forgotten that job hunting for freshers comprises of decision making at a gun point?

From a world where marks are the ultimate decision maker of choice, we push them into choosing career paths that the majority cannot translate into a picture of reality. Why do they have to learn the hard way?

Reality is about asking what, how and why? But where are the answers to be found?

I go to some of these career orientation programmes in schools. And I wonder who is going to tell them that travel jobs are not about traveling, nor hotel jobs about food, and neither are IT jobs about green cards!

And if you want to believe that it is all crap, I suggest you go to a career counselor who deals in foreign education. Well, then you get to know the reality after paying some good money not only to them, but to some foreign Government.

If you cannot translate reality into a career environment then the old fashioned way of trial and error may be more practical. It may take time to learn but is definitely cheaper and you have the luxury of wasting time to realize that all career choices are reversible or at least convertible.

And what about the girls who are still wondering about the perfect choice – one that combines bread winning with marriage and kids?

Well, you tell her there is no such thing! I really don’t have the guts.

Looking for a job? No clue on the where, when and whether?

Most of us are as lost as any other. We hope someone has a map with directions. It does not exist.

For the Indian Jobseeker easy access to information on the internet may be soothing but its effectiveness is questionable.

The comfort of emails,SMSs and internet coverage has resulted in making our claws blunt but it has not done much more..

What has happened to the platforms of information that are popularly used by jobseekers? They have become clogged. Jobseekers are complaining about not finding what they need .Searching, finding and accessing is quite a feat, considering the job content on the internet is voluminous, repetitive and often obsolete.

Also the placement firms subscribe to databases of jobseekers and are so flooded with choices that the individual jobseeker complains of feeling unwanted.

Without an aggressive posture the problem cannot be handled .To believe that you need not know how to research for jobs because others are doing it for you is living in a fool’s paradise. It is amazing that the majority of Indian Jobseekers have no clue on job research methodologies and still bank on systems like campus recruitment, resume blasting, job alerts, news letters et al… that have become obsolete.

But do we realize that there is more to farming than weather alerts.

Resume- making artistry lures Indian jobseekers

Employers have finally got down to seriously asking those evergreen questions all over again. A natural fallout of which is putting the potential employee through a microscope.

This has resulted in a new wave in the job market. There are hordes looking for professional expertise in making a resume…for someone who can identify the crucial value factor in a person…or at least think up of one where there is none.

Now, there is a new mushrooming business in town — that of resume making — online and offline. Each one claiming better artistry over the others. For the thirsty jobseekers in the middle of a drought, this one last straw of hope is not left in vain.

There is a cheer amongst those who now have new baits for old hooks. Of course, it will definitely be a flash in the pan; but till it lasts, all of us must look more kindly towards bio-emails that blink, flash, space into infinity, or sing. And be thankful that it doesn’t get worse — like perfumed paper.

Till then, I guess, blink-blink is better than blinkers!
