Jobseekers in India rarely analyze the various nuances of the job hunting process

Job hunting needs to be viewed in a perspective of totality.

Lima Sehgal

Job hunting leaves a trail of rejections over time, but we seldom go beyond defining the process beyond, win or lose.

Instead of asking if we are on the right track, we are too busy with the search. For example, if we stay in Delhi, all we think of is that we want a Placement Consultant in Delhi, or just a job in Delhi.

Job hunting needs to be viewed in a perspective of totality. It is definitely about beating a track through the jungle, but where survival is more than having a machine gun as a survival kit.

For starters, the research is more important than the search. Most of us can quote a vacancy with admirable accuracy, but there is very little knowledge about the company’s definition about suitability. We worry more about the polish of the resume, the dress, shoes, the style, the confidence, but much less about listening to the rhythms of a company’s being. Winning or losing is unimportant, but not developing a sixth sense to comprehend a company’s individuality or emotionality is like inviting murder to interview rationale.

We worry so much about the competition but beyond the superficial or the statistics we do little to understand it. But it is worth considering the fact that it is not always the best guy, the more experienced or the slickest interview savvy dude, who gets the job. The heaven favored, come in various bottles and packages.

How many of us bother to find out about who won what you lost?

The definition of successful survivors in the job market jungle is definitely not about those who never get bitten .But about those who, irrespective of either winning or losing or being wounded give equal importance to knowing both facts – Why Me? and Why not Me?

Building self Confidence

One of the most important personal qualities you should have in order to successfully do your tasks and face the world is self-confidence.

So if you are one of the many who finds himself trapped on personal fear and inefficiency, then you must build your self-confidence at once. The question, however, is: “How should I do that?”

Mehar Bhagat

These are tips on how to build your self-confidence effectively.

-Overcoming self-consciousness.

The opposite of self-confidence is self-conscious. And this is where you should start. But how will you know if you are self-conscious?

You are self-conscious if you feel anxious on things ahead of you. Sometimes fear goes along with anxiety. The trick is trying not to focus too much on what is coming ahead. (Fearing what is not yet happening is commonly called intellectual fear). Fighting against this would mean trying to divert your attention from things that make you anxious or fearful. Step your thoughts away from those ideas. Releasing the self-consciousness may take a while but once you know the technique, you will overcome it pretty fast. If you are uncomfortable when too many people are around, you don’t have any choice but to face your discomfort. Remember that in a fight, you can never win if you will not face your enemy. This time, your enemy is your discomfort when there are too many people around, so try to find ways on how to deal with this. You can consider integrating with them. You can also ask a friend to introduce you to other people if you are on a party perhaps. Find out information about other people before you approach them so that you will come prepared. Make some contacts so that you can expand the people around you and so on…

Overcoming self-conscious can be hard but knowing what has to be done can make it easier for you to build confidence.

Feel good about yourself

If you lack self-confidence, you might also have low self-esteem. And the root of these two is your outlook on yourself. Surely, if you see yourself as ugly, incapable, and different from others, your self-confidence and self-esteem are low.

What you should do is to disregard all your negative perception about yourself and try to focus on the good things in you. Avoid thinking that you are not good enough. Instead, think that you can do things better than others. Smile in front of the mirror every morning and praise the good things in you. If you cannot find one, then you must find one.

Be wary about criticism.

Most people who lack self-confidence tend to believe every negative comment others say about them. And they would not even bother to differentiate which are constructive and which are destructive. So make sure that the moment somebody gives you criticism, never just accept every word they say.

For example, if somebody tells you that you are not good enough and you keep messing around, try not to accept it as a general truth about yourself. Think why someone has to say that. Okay, something must be wrong about you but do not stop there. Make some changes if you must but most of all never get affected with words from other people.

Finding jobs -perceptions of jobseekers in India

Jobs like marriage is about finding the right match, but finding the match right match is not all there is to marriage.

There are various perceptions about finding jobs.

Lima Sehgal

Those who believe that finding the right job is about formula find that the neighbour who has the greener grass in his backyard is not likely to share the formula with them.

Those who believe that miracles rule successful jobhunting also find that the guy next door is better blessed.

For those who see the hand of karma, are least stressed. The wait and watch style in jobhunting is relaxing as long as it does not become too long.

For most of us jobhunting is a dubious cocktail.

Perhaps what is shared by most jobseekers is the fact that jobs have to be caught and got. Most of us are armed with lists of where to go and whom to ask which get taken out and dusted free of the cobwebs of the mind, on a need basis. Added to which are a few new things which others are using.

After all, what is the fuss when all one wants is the next best job.

Easier said than done, but jobs like marriage is about finding the right match, but finding the match right match is not all there is to marriage.

Going beyond methodology implies that one discards tried and tested methodologies, or logical courses, in favour of creating something new. We favour following the herd, then trying to beat it by being the first at getting to greener pastures. Since everyone else has the same idea, we get hurt in the stampede.

Competing for jobs definitely means using a strategy that no one else has.

The Good Fake

Faking is most progressive. It has been linked to the development of the neocortex. Those who faked well got better deals and survived and passed on their survival arts. Those who didn’t, also survived but slogged their lives for the other lot.

The Good Fake

Lima Sehgal

Thou Shalt not get Caught, is the commandment that got added as the Eleventh, and one wonders how that one got missed both by Moses as well as Charlston Heston!

Faking it is not the prerogative of only the Indian army who did a pretty good job of filming fake enemy kills in the Siachen. (Bollywood is trembling at the competition I am told). But any conscientious employee in any other profession would do it. Not only does it make a contribution where there is none, but it also makes one’s organization look like a great contributor when it is not. Now, doesn’t that sound like a winning proposition! Enron made a multinational business out of it, when they cooked up their account books so good that even they could not keep track of how good they were. Which unfortunately for them became equivalent to crossing the Laxman Rekha.

Not everyone can be an expert like our first Lady, Eve. Most of us acquire the talent through the process of learning. She not only started the tradition which made her the icon of our future she also demonstrated a lot of style. Remember that old story?

One day in the Garden of Eden, Eve calls out to God… “Lord, I have a problem!”

“What’s the problem, Eve?”

“Lord, I know you’ve created me and have provided this beautiful garden and all of these wonderful animals, and that hilarious comedic snake, but I’m just not happy.”

“Why is that, Eve?” came the reply from above.

“Lord, I am lonely. And I’m sick to death of apples.”

“Well, Eve, in that case, I have a solution. I shall create a man for you.”

“What’s a ‘man’, Lord?”

“This man will be a flawed creature, with aggressive tendencies, an enormous ego and an inability to empathize or listen to you properly.

All in all, he’ll give you a hard time. But, he’ll be bigger, faster and more muscular than you. He’ll also need your advice to think properly. He’ll be really good at fighting and kicking a ball about, hunting fleet-footed ruminants, and not altogether bad in the sack.”

“Sounds great,” says Eve, with an ironically raised eyebrow. “What’s the catch, Lord?”

“Yeah, well…. you can have him on one condition.”

“What’s that, Lord?”

“You’ll have to let him believe that I made him first.”

With the progress of technology, faking as an art has become much more evolved. And ever since we have gone virtual, it makes us far removed, which in turn makes us much braver. Definitely it is here to stay and spread. And anyone who gets moralistic and calls a virtue a virus is suffering from either a mental delusion or a spelling handicap!

And you must tell them that faking is most progressive.

It has been linked to the development of the neocortex. Those who faked well got better deals and survived and passed on their survival arts. Those who didn’t, also survived but slogged their lives for the other lot.

As simple as that.

It is part and parcel of us through the ages. In nature be it a flower, plant or insect or any thing else , the parasitic ones are more evolved, they sweat the least. They are also more colorful for that matter!

The same applies to humans. The parasitic are the cream of skimmed milk. They are there everywhere – housewives better qualified than their husbands who refuse to work towards breadwinning , hiding under the mantle of home neglect as an excuse, the married youth with kids who wont relocate for a job to another city because he lives with parents who feed (Oops , sorry ) need him, the efficient manager whose sales report convinces his boss that the new product will not work because, marketing it demands a competence that he doesn’t have — and the list goes on.

Today there is an urgent need for parasitic skills to reach new heights. Especially when there is fierce competition which has to be met by delivering, creating, and innovating at the macro level and at the micro level also — someone has to pay the bills, meet the targets, make the school project, stand in the queue, feed the cat etc.

Which basically implies that Our Hosts need to be made to work harder. They are the ones who must create, think and contribute. They are the ones on whose table the buck must be made to stop, who must take risks on our behalf and must be made to take the axe for us. And we must not be like Rats deserting a sinking ship. That would be idiotic. You don’t compromise the host – not if you want to survive.

The issues are not only about compromising our host — but worse. We are sometimes not even able to effectively identify a suitable host.

Take this example. Nichiren Daishonin, the 13th century Buddhist scholar stated that ‘no one becomes rich by just counting his neighbors’ money’. But looking at modern trends, no one is quite convinced. We believe we can if only we convince him to part with a little to us. But it doesn’t work unless we do some classwork. Every neighbour was on my heel with Avon, so fiercely that even I started believing in my non existent wealth. (I still am looking for it).

And so are they. So what is the use?

What is strongly needed today is an international organisation to protect the ecology. The only reason it is not being formed is the reluctance towards calling a parasite a parasite!

Self confidence is the magic that can bring happiness and success for you

Mehar Bhagat

Self confidence is the magic that can bring happiness and success for you

You have probably noticed those people at work, school, and in your daily life that always appear to be self confident and on top of world.

Everything seems to go right for these people and they always seem to present themselves as calm, collected and successful in everything they do.

If you are paying attention you have probably noticed that these self confident people usually are successful in every area of their lives.

Is this because they are smarter? Or is it because they have more money? Maybe they are just lucky?

The reality is that none of these things are necessarily true.

Self confident people understand the impact of believing in themselves and relying on their abilities.

This confidence ultimately creates opportunities for success and with each new success another self confidence building block is put into place. Success builds upon success reinforcing self confidence with each new achievement.

Self confident people perceive themselves as able to achieve those things they set out to do and this perception creates reality in their lives.

Yes, perception creates reality. You can become the person you want to be. You have heard it said that if you can believe it you can achieve it.

So start believing in yourself, acting on that belief and you will start building self confidence in your life.

Here are some helpful tips to build self confidence one success at a time,

The Magical Ways

- Make a list of your strong points.

All the positive things about yourself and the things that you are good at doing. Think of compliments you have received or things that come easily to you. It doesn’t matter what it is, if it’s good, write it down.

-Choose two of those things that you want to work on to improve even more.

It’s important to succeed and by concentrating on the areas you are already good at you will have a better chance of becoming even more sure of yourself. Remember that success builds upon success.

- Exude confidence even if you don’t feel like it.

Talk to yourself in an encouraging way and stay away from negative thoughts and people as you can.

Instead surround yourself with positive, confident, and successful people. This will become a habit and one that will build confidence.

- Look at yourself in a different way than you are used to doing.

It can change your life and help your confidence level to rise. See yourself as the self confident person you want to be and before you know it you will become that person.

If you have a set-back, do not let it get the best of you. Remember the times when you exhibited self confidence and how good it felt and then try again and each time will help you to build confidence and confidence building will become a way

For Personal Growth – Understand what’s important to you.

Each personality type has a different idea of what it means to be successful. Self-knowledge is one common goal that will help everyone achieve personal success. So many people are hung up on somebody else’s idea of what it means to be successful, and they are unaware of what is truly important to them. This is completely normal. We all have important role-models and influencers in our lives who may have basic values that are quite different from our own. If this is the case, it’s important to recognize that the discrepancy between what we have been taught is truly important and what we personally believe to be truly important is due to a difference in perspective. If we spend our time and effort trying to meet somebody else’s idea of success, and ignore or belittle any conflicting messages from our own psyche, then we will find ourselves exhausted and unhappy. Realizing what is truly important to us is a major step towards achieving personal success.

Job-seekers in India are conditioned to compromise and conformity

THE INDIAN WORK ETHOS

Lima Sehgal

The herd instinct is so deeply entrenched in us that we always look for some one to follow. Our shepherds come in various avatars- daddies, schoolteachers, yuppies, best friends, gurus, neighbours etc.

No doubt there is a practical goodness about being a follower. When things backfire we have the luxury of blaming it on someone – like our ruling political party, our parents, the lousy economy, unfair competition, the Americans … and we continue to remain untainted.

The moment our babies learn to walk and get toilet trained we don’t waste a moment in getting them into a system. The one that promises to herd us into a direction that leads to what we believe is greener pastures.

First, it is the playschool which gives an education on how to play. Then it is the schooling system that gives an education on how not to play. Main stream schooling becomes a serious business of tutorials and achievement of good scholastic marks.

The Indian scholastic system is wonderful in its ability to produce conformists who join the workforce. It may perhaps be a great asset for employers to have employees who only ‘Do’ but never think (great for bosses), but for the individual it remains questionable.

Conformity results in the problem that the Indian professional faces, which is an inability to adapt to the demands of change- And worse, an inability to face the demands of our extremely volatile job – market.

We are focused on a system of education which is supposed to lead us to getting a job. But nobody actually goes beyond a point to reassess their value in context of the job market realities.Golden promises? Much of it is excluded from reality.

Let us take a few examples.

I have come across Engineers with good work experience aspiring for a job in a foreign country, who can’t converse in English or anything apart from their local regional lingo, so how do they expect to communicate? I regularly meet fresh MBA’s who expect to get hired as managers with salaries of CEO’s. I also know quite a few senior professionals who refuse to study advanced professional courses (because it is not needed at their age), and then complain about these new fangled kids who take over.

This inability to take charge and harness change to one’s advantage is sadly lacking in the majority of Indian professionals. The ability to change course, to admit mistakes in career choices or even to simply reassess tried and tested job market related methodologies is alien for the majority.

Get a job, keep a job, save and retire, no longer rings true as reality. All those years of fuss – what did it amount to? Jobs are not for keeps, job hunting methods are changing by the minute, and our educational systems do not create much enthusiasm in the global job market. So what is the new formula that can be followed?

Can we think? After so many years of habit of compromise and conformity the quality of our thinking becomes questionable.

There seems to be a new viral in the air. Jobs are no longer about getting them. For quite a few years with the march of time our prized jobs for engineers, doctors, chartered accountants, IT professionals etc has undergone so much redefinition in the job market, that we hardly know what sense to make of the flotsam and jetsam of the wreckage. Suddenly looking back the system of reaching one’s destination or following a methodology of education looks meaningless.
